Description
Senna (Cassia angustifolia), also known as senna, has been known for centuries for its laxative effect. Senna leaf tea is said to promote bowel movements by stimulating the intestines and softening the stool. This is because senna leaves contain compounds called sennosides, which can irritate your digestive tract and thus stimulate bowel movements.
Senna tea is a popular herbal remedy often promoted as a laxative, weight loss aid, and detox method. However, there is little scientific evidence to support the effectiveness of senna tea for most of these uses, except for the treatment of constipation.
It is recommended to use no more than 2 grams of senna leaves per liter of water. Senna should only be used for occasional relief of constipation, as excessive use can harm your digestive tract. Adults should use it no more than 2 to 3 times a week and for no longer than 2 weeks to avoid the risk of “lazy bowel.”
Its use in children is not recommended. Senna is also not advised if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, or if you are currently taking blood thinners or steroids.
